2015 Cabela’s School of the Year Program Underway

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - As summer draws to a close and students settle into a new school year, a race is underway- the Cabela’s School of the Year race, that is. The 2015 Cabela’s School of the Year program runs July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. With an FLW Southern College Fishing Invitational and the 2014 Carhartt College Series National Championship already in the books, the 2013 Cabela’s School of the Year victor, and perineal college fishing powerhouse, the University of Louisiana Monroe has jumped out to an early lead with top 5 finishes in both tournaments. With over forty more ACA sanctioned events to come in the season, the title is up in the air to see who is the best of the best in college fishing.
The current list of ACA sanctioned events includes major tournaments from the three national collegiate circuits: the Association of Collegiate Anglers’ Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, Carhartt College B.A.S.S., and FLW College Fishing. Along with these circuits, schools may host ACA sanctioned events throughout the year based on good participation and discretion from the Association of Collegiate Anglers.
The ACA Cabela’s School of the Year program was the first program of its kind to rank collegiate bass fishing teams across all circuits and provide the first national collegiate fishing rankings. The program illustrates the continued growth in collegiate bass fishing, with over 250 teams earning points in 2014.
Wade Middleton, Director of the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series and President of Careco TV, stated that, “The Cabela’s School of the Year program is something I’ve wanted to see grow since we formed the ACA and we are proud of its growth. To see how important it has become to these young anglers is a testament to the competitiveness in college bass fishing.”
With the race underway, these collegiate anglers are already strategically planning their practice days and tournament tactics for events down the road. The Cabela’s Big Bass Bash on Kentucky Lake, the Collegiate Bass Fishing Open on Lake Chickamauga, and the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship on Lake Pickwick have been events seen by many collegiate anglers before; however, a new event, the Texas Shootout on Lake Texoma, has been added to the schedule.
As a new change to the Cabela’s School of the Year rules, two teams can earn points at all of the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series events, essentially considered to be a “double points” event, as opposed to only one team from each school at any other event, making the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series events very influential. The addition of the Texas Shootout event offers schools an extra double points tournament in the season. As the fourth double points event in the Cabela’s School of the Year race, the door to the points race has been swung right open.
Middleton added, “In the first three years we’ve had three great winners with Arkansas Tech (2012) and the University of Louisiana Monroe (2013) and now the 2014 Cabela’s School of the Year- the University of North Alabama. Both on and off the water these students work their tails off, and I think stories such as theirs are great for our sport. It’s our pleasure to bring them, and the other top schools, the recognition they deserve. We’re looking forward to highlighting programs such as these on Americana Outdoors® presented by Garmin."
The Cabela’s School of the Year program recognizes all collegiate fishing circuits in the points race in order for the title of the Cabela’s School of the Year to be completely earned by the winning school. The different circuits along with school run events offer a diverse, but representative system that supplies the Cabela’s School of the Year race with great events throughout the year.
