SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 2015 Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley is set for another year on Kentucky Lake in Paris Landing, Tennessee on March 13-15. As the seventh year of the Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley, anglers know that this is a tournament that you do not want to miss. The giant bass that call this Tennessee River Chain reservoir home and the insane payouts that the Association of Collegiate Anglers are now increasing to over $20,000 in prizes making this event the most unique in any college circuit!

With less than a month away from the tournament, most anglers have been putting in their due diligence and researching the best and most historically productive ways to catch some of the infamous giant bass that Kentucky Lake has been known to produce. But as many tournament anglers know, computer research and studying your maps can only get you so far. That’s why we thought it would be advantageous for all the competing anglers to get a little extra advice from Yamaha and Cabela’s Pro, Jeff Kriet.

As history would show, the March can be a cold month to fish the lake, but the seasoned veteran offered some great tips to catch some cold weather giants.

“What I would be looking for in Kentucky Lake in March would be the secondary channel swings and creeks,” Kriet said. “Though it might be cold, the main factor is not all about water temperature; it’s the length of days. I’m not going to go where they’re going to spawn, but I’m going to go where those fish are going to move to spawn. There is a lot of structure in those creeks and I would spend my time in the creeks and channels that lead to spawning areas.”

Kriet’s top three lures to throw in Kentucky Lake in March would be a jerkbait, a jig, and an Alabama Rig. These are three of the HydroWave Pro’s favorite lures to throw in pre-spawn conditions and have yielded some giant bass.

“You need to throw baits that catch big fish for that time of year and a jerkbait, jig, and an Alabama Rig are the main ones to do the job. I would throw a jerkbait in channel swings in secondary channels as a definite go-to. Jigs will also be a player on those secondary points to get that different presentation and they are known as a big bass bait no matter what time of year. And of course the Alabama Rig would be a huge player in this event as well on creeks, channels, points, and even the bluffs leading into the creeks,” said Kriet.

Anglers should be prepared for snow and cold weather conditions, and of course pack a few jerkbaits, jigs, and Alabama Rigs before they make the trip to Kentucky Lake for the 2015 Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley!
